I Love Limerick for 2010 St Patrick’s Festival Posted on February 8th, 2010

The 2010 Limerick St Patrick’s Festival will celebrate everything that is great about the Treaty City with an I LOVE LIMERICK theme, it was announced today.

Festival organisers are hoping that a spectacle of colour and sound will fill the streets of Limerick with a parade that celebrates all that the Riverside City has to offer.

The theme of I Love Limerick can be interpreted in a number of ways, participants can decide to design a float/entry to show their pride in their home city, their school, business, sports club or community event so there is plenty of scope to be creative.

Children from senior infants in St Patrick’s Girls National School on the Dublin Road launched the theme of the parade today (Monday) with a giant green heart which they created and will enter as part of their festival entry for March 17th.

All sporting, cultural, community, business and social organisations are invited to take part in the event which takes place on Tuesday, March 17th.

Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Kevin Kiely is appealing to everyone to get involved.

“There are so many events taking place in Limerick this year that 2010 will be a great year to showcase and celebrate our city,” he said. “St Patrick’s Day is our national holiday and it is an opportunity for a great family day out with lots of colour, music and entertainment. Community spirit is now more vital than ever and I want everyone to come along and enjoy the fun.”

The National Lottery Skyfest as part of the national St Patrick’s Festival celebrations will kick off festivities in Limerick on Saturday, March 13th.

The Limerick International Band Competition now in its 40h year will begin at 12noon on Sunday, March 14th and the colourful Limerick St Patrick’s Day Parade will also start at 12 noon on Wednesday, March 17th.

The Limerick St Patrick’s Festival is run on behalf of the Limerick Co-Ordination Office by Futureama Productions.

“Last year, the gardai estimated that 60,000 people attended the festivities in Limerick making it the second largest parade held in the country and the biggest parade in the city for the last ten years,” said Fran O’Donnell, managing director, Futureama Productions.

“We’re working hard on the International Band Competition this year for the 40th anniversary and even though resources are tight for many bands, we’re hoping for a great turn-out.

We’re encouraging participants to be inventive and creative with their ideas for floats-with the National Lottery Skyfest, the 40th International Band Competition and a huge parade we want the 2010 festivities in Limerick to be the best yet,” Mr O’Donnell added.

Anyone wishing to take part in this year’s festival can download the application forms for the St Patrick’s Day Parade or the Band Parade.

The deadline for entry to the band competition and the St Patrick’s Day parade is Friday, February 19th.
