Moyross Set for €600,000 Investment with the Opening of New Eurospar Posted on August 24th, 2010

Moyross is set for a €600,000 investment with the re-opening of the estate’s only supermarket which was destined for closure with the loss of 54 jobs.

The former Supervalu premises at Watchhouse Cross will officially re-open as a Eurospar on September 3rd with Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Maria Byrne set to cut the ribbon.

There had been fears that the 54 employees would lose their jobs but Eurospar owner Maurice Smith has confirmed that all jobs will be retained.

“We are delighted to announce that there will be no job losses, but job creation,” said Mr Smith.

“Plans are well underway for our new refurbished Eurospar to open on September 3rd and we have created ten extra jobs already as part of that process. We are committed to investing in the local community and committed to growing our business so we are hopeful that we can take…

Limerick Public Urged to Come Out and Support Thomond Swim! Posted on August 19th, 2010

Limerick’s top open water swimmers will be in action on the River Shannon next Wednesday, August 25th for The Thomond Swim.

Fifty members of Limerick Masters Swimming Club will take on one of the toughest challenges of their annual calendar and will be joined by other invited Swim Ireland Masters swimmers from Dublin, Cork and Galway.

Two swimmers from the Aran Swim Challenge (From Inis Oirr to Doolin) will also be taking part as well as swimmers from the UL High Performance Team. 

Members of the public are invited to support the swim which takes place at 7pm and will be officially launched by Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Maria Byrne.

The 1.7km swim will start at St Michael’s Boat Club slipway, head up to the Curragower Falls to Thomond Bridge and return to finish at Howley’s Quay.

Limerick Tunnel Opens Today Posted on July 27th, 2010

The Limerick Tunnel PPP Scheme which opens today, Tuesday, July 27th, comprises 10km of dual carriageway including the 675 metres Limerick Tunnel under the River Shannon.

The Limerick Tunnel PPP Scheme forms Phase 2 of the Limerick Southern Ring Road and connects Phase 1 at Rossbrien on the south side of the city to the N18 Ennis Road on the west and is part of the National Roads Authority’s Public Private Partnership (PPP) programme. The concession contract was awarded to the Direct Route (Limerick) Ltd Consortium in August 2006 and they hold the concession for a 35 year period. This project has been funded by the Irish Government under National Development Plan 2007-2013 and Transport 21.

Grand Prix Cars to Return to Streets of Limerick Posted on July 26th, 2010

Vintage racing cars are set to return to the streets of Limerick as the city hosts a unique one day event on Sunday, August 1st 2010 to mark the 75th anniversary of the first Limerick Grand Prix.

The Limerick Classic and Vintage Car Club will hold the commemorative event to mark the special anniversary of the first Limerick Grand Prix believed to be the only street racing circuit outside of Monte Carlo which remains unchanged 75 years on.

The event will commemorate the events of August 5th 1935 when the Mayor of Limerick waved a historic tricolour to officially start Limerick’s “Round the Houses” Grand Prix.  At the time the race would have been the equivalent of the present day Formula 1 races and attracted Grand Prix Teams and drivers from all over Europe as well as top Irish drivers of the time.

Limerick Milk Market to Host the City’s First Artisan Craft Fair Posted on July 21st, 2010

Limerick’s first ever Artisan Craft Fair will take place in the city’s Milk Market on Thursday, July 29th.

It’s set to be held on the last Thursday of every month and is aimed at bringing a wide variety of Ireland’s artisan community together on a monthly basis in order to showcase and demonstrate their talents to a large audience.

Limerick’s Pig ‘n’ Porter to Get Underway this Weekend! Posted on July 12th, 2010

Colourful flags celebrating the Pig’nPorter Festival are flying from Limerick city’s bridges this week as the world’s largest tag rugby festival gets underway!

More than 4,000 people are expected in Limerick as a record 140 teams- the largest participation EVER- travel to the popular sporting blitz.

Old Crescent RFC in association with the Irish Tag Rugby Association (ITRA) will host the 9th annual Pig ‘n’ Porter Tag Rugby Festival at their grounds in Rosbrien, Limerick between Friday, July 16th and Sunday, July 18th 2010.

This year’s three day event which is sponsored by Heinz will also feature for the first time a hockey blitz, an underage tag rugby expo and the inaugural Pig on a Spit cooking competition on Sunday afternoon which is set to become a huge attraction.
